چکیده

Observations of distant galaxies play a key role in improving our understanding of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). The observed Lyα emission line strength – quantified by its restframe equivalent width (EW) – provides a valuable diagnostic of stellar populations and dust in galaxies during and after the EoR. In this paper we quantify the effects of star formation stochasticity on the predicted Lyα EW in dwarf galaxies, using the publicly available code SLUG (used to ‘Stochastically Light Up Galaxies’). We compute the number of hydrogen ionizing photons, as well as flux in the Far UV for a set of models with star formation rates (SFR) in the range 10−3-1 M yr −1. From these fluxes we compute the luminosity, Lα, and the EW of the Lyα line. We find that stochasticity alone induces a broad distribution in Lα and EW at a fixed SFR, and that the widths of these distributions decrease with increasing SFR. We parameterize the EW probability density function (PDF) as an SFR–dependent double power law. We find that it is possible to have EW as low as ∼EW0/4 and as high as ∼ 3×EW0, where EW0 denotes the expected EW in the absence of stochasticity. We argue that stochasticity may therefore be important when linking drop-out and narrow-band selected galaxies, when identifying population III galaxies, and that it may help to explain the large EW (EW >∼100− 200 Å) observed for a fraction of Lyα selected galaxies. Finally, we show that stochasticity can also affect the inferred escape fraction of ionizing photons from galaxies. In particular, we argue that stochasticity may simultaneously explain the observed anomalous ratios of the Lyman continuum flux density to the (non-ionizing) UV continuum density in so-called Lyman-Bump galaxies at z = 3.1, as well as the absence of such objects among a sample of z = 1.3 drop-out galaxies.

Essential observations of the Lyman continuum

Concurrent observations of Lyman continuum (LyC) and Lyman α (Lyα) emission escaping from star-forming systems at low redshift are essential to understanding the physics of reionization at high redshift (z & 6). Some have suggested reionization is dominated by numerous small galaxies with LyC escape fractions fe ∼ 10%, while others suggest mini-quasars with higher fe might also play a role. At ...

If the universe was reionized by O and B stars in an early population of galaxies, the associated supernovae should have enriched the universe to a mean metallicity Z̄ = 10(1 + nrec), where nrec is the mean number of times that each baryon recombined during the reionization era. This is consistent with recent observations of the metallicity in the Lyα forest at z ≃ 3. The mean surface brightness...

New constraints on cosmic reionization from the luminosity and redshift-dependent fraction of Lyman α emission

We present the first results of a new Keck spectroscopic survey of UV faint Lyman break galaxies in the redshift range 3 < z < 7. Combined with earlier Keck and published European Southern Observatory (ESO) VLT data, our spectroscopic sample contains more than 600 dropouts offering new insight into the nature of sub-L∗ sources typical of those likely to dominate the cosmic reionization process....

The Inhomogeneous Background of H2 Dissociating Radiation during Cosmic Reionization

The first, self-consistent calculations are presented of the cosmological, H2-dissociating UV background produced during the epoch of reionization by the sources of reionization. Large-scale radiative transfer simulations of reionization trace the impact of all the ionizing starlight on the IGM from all the sources in our simulation volume down to dwarf galaxies of mass ∼ 10 M⊙, identified by v...

Se p 20 03 Observable Properties of Cosmological Reionization Sources

Motivated by recent evidence that the epoch of reionization of hydrogen may have ended at a redshift as low as z ≈ 6, we consider the detectability of the sources responsible for this reionization. The main idea is that reionization places limits on the mean surface brightness of the population of reionization sources. Reducing the number of model-dependent assumptions to a minimum, we discuss ...
